Does anyone else remember Tom Peter’s 1999 book: “Reinventing Work: the Brand You50”, in which Tom predicted the current state of affairs? You know, the one where he told us that the path to success requires having a “free-lance consultant mindset”, and that “jobs will be performed by temporary networks that disband when the project is done”, and that “the only thing that matters is, doing work that matters!”?
Guess what! He was right! Just look at some of the statistics:
- It is currently expected that people in the workforce (that includes the self-employed) will hold between 14-17 different jobs in their life time.
- 1 in 13 people have a Facebook account!
- LinkedIn has become one of the largest crowdsourcing platforms for solving business challenges across the globe.
- There are over 4,000,000,000 views per day on YouTube… (Yes, that is 9 zeros!)
- On average, Gen Z’ers (born: 1995-2009) spend 10 hours and 19 minutes using technology… every day. And, if you are not a Gen Z’er, odds are high that your utilization is pretty darn close to the same!
So, with all of these exciting observations, the really fascinating thing to me is that the newest generation, is not a generation at all. In fact, it is a Mash-up Generation. Commonly referred to as GenFlux.
